Muse - Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

This polished stainless steel contemporary sculpture is an iconic marker for the Palos Verdes Art Center. Muse is an eighteen foot tall female-figure inspired form, created with mirror-polished 316 (marine grade) stainless steel.

Art is said to be inspired by a Muse. A secret whisper to your soul to create, to change... to turn the world upside down.

It is this concept which inspired award winning sculptor Heath Satow. With its silvery, high polished mirror surfaces, Muse gently rises and curves to form an abstract column, standing sentry like in front of the Palos Verdes Art Center.

There is something familiar about the imperfect symmetry of Muse. The enigma is revealed upon altering your viewing perspective: this is the classical female form. Reinforcing the concept of art providing a new perspective, the subtle concave surfaces of Muse invert earth and sky in the reflections.

A strong world history of "art inspired by muse" ties the sculpture to the Art Center itself – with Muse as a symbol for the very creation of art itself inside its walls.

Technical specifications: 18 feet tall plus base (an added 42"), 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Made from mirror-polished 316 (marine grade) stainless steel. The shape is a contemporary form rooted in the historical: references to Brancusi's Bird in Space and Endless Column can be seen. The form also relates to the many uses of a muse as sculpture throughout art history. In this way, the sculpture is at once classical and contemporary.
