The Seed
6' x 6' x 6' - Oxidized steel, mirror-polished stainless steel
The Seed is a site-specific sculpture for Southern Utah University, located in the courtyard
of the Leavitt Business Building West, that symbolizes the growth and potential of its students
through the form of a native Physalis hederifolia seedpod. Inspired by Utah’s pioneer heritage
and the resilience of early settlers, the sculpture pairs a corten pod that echoes the region’s
iron-rich landscape with a highly polished stainless steel sphere representing the “seed” of
future achievement.
Designed as a quiet, reflective presence rather than a dominant landmark, it embodies the balance
of tradition and innovation central to SUU’s mission. The internal mirrored surface invites
interaction, capturing the individual and collective journey of students as they grow, transform,
and realize their potential.
